Working out not only helps your figure, but also improves your complexion. Exercise may be one of the best skin remedies for acne, wrinkles, dull skin and more.
It’s hardly news that exercise is great for your heart, lungs, and mental health. Here’s another reason to get moving: Regular exercise is one of the keys to healthy skin; it can go a long way toward improving your complexion; clearing up acne and warding off signs of premature aging.
OXYGEN! Hmmmmm. This is interesting!
By getting your cardiovascular rate and blood flow up, exercise delivers more nutrients, like vitamins and oxygen, to the skin cells all over your face and body. That increase in vitamins and oxygen to your skin cells helps them reproduce and enables the repair mechanisms in your skin to undo damage from years past.
And improved blood flow also carries nutrients to the skin. When we exercise, the tiny arteries in our skin open up, allowing more blood to reach the skin’s surface and deliver nutrients that repair damage from the sun and environmental pollutants. This added blood, oxygen and nutrients supplied to the skin revs up collagen production, which keeps the skin smooth and plump.
You can think of it as cleansing your skin from the inside.
In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from our skin cells. Plus, all that sweating cleans out the pores of congested skin. It’s like the equivalent of getting a mini-facial. When the pores dilate, sweat expels trapped dirt and oil.
Acne prone skin?
Breaking a sweat isn’t the only way exercise benefits the skin — exercise promotes the release of mood-boosting brain chemicals that help ease stress. Studies show that sebaceous gland overproduction and acne aggravating inflammation are influenced by stress hormones.
Exercise is not limited to the treadmill! Hiking, golf, swimming and yoga are all great ways to mix up your routine, stay motivated and bring down stress levels. Well, for me – maybe not golf – if I want to reduce stress.
Here are a few tips to reap the beneficial skin effects of working out.
- Drink water! In addition to hydrating your skin from the inside out, increasing your water intake will also help flush out trapped toxins, oils, and debris that can contribute to acne.
- Avoid exercising with makeup on your face.
- Try not to touch your face during your workout to avoid spreading germs from your equipment to your skin.
- Tie your hair back so your hair care products won’t drip down your face and neck and cause breakouts. Be sure to cleanse your face and other areas that tend to break out right after exercising. (I carry my toner in my gym bag for immediate skin refreshment.)
- When you exercise outside, remember to wear sunscreen.
