Are you a little anxious about being back in the classroom this fall?
Sorry, silly question – we’d be surprised if you weren’t!
Managing back-to-school stress may seem like an overwhelming task, but it’s actually pretty simple.
There’s help on the way!
We’ve compiled the following list of stress relievers that are most appropriate for students: relatively easy, quick, and relevant to a student’s life. They’ll help you to function at your best, and start the school year stress-free and full of excitement.
Embrace Change as an Opportunity to Grow — something to be embraced, not avoided.
Did you know that optimists actually experience better circumstances, in part, because their way of thinking helps to create better circumstances in their lives? It’s true! The start of a new school year is also a pathway to exciting opportunities that will allow you to learn and grow, to become more resilient, and to make new friends for life. The habit of optimism and positive thinking can bring better health, better relationships, and, yes, better grades. Tools for optimism include focusing on your strengths with self affirmations and positive “self talk”.
Going back to school can involve needing to keep track of an overwhelming amount of physical items, including papers, forms, books, and school supplies.
It’s a fact that clutter causes stress, and can decrease productivity and even cost you money! Many students live in a cluttered place and even have cluttered study areas, and this can have negative effects on grades. One way to reduce the amount of stress that you experience as a student is to keep a minimalist, soothing study area that’s free of distractions and clutter. It’s worth the effort! Prepare school bags and clothes the night before, arrange books and school supplies on shelves or in boxes or drawers, organize all paperwork by priority, and make a single to-do list of all the tasks you need to complete each day.
When your body is experiencing stress you’re often not thinking as clearly as you could be. A quick way to calm down is to practice breathing exercises. These can be done virtually anywhere to relieve stress in minutes, and are especially effective for reducing anxiety before or even during tests, as well as during other times when stress feels overwhelming.
Failing to breathe deeply means our brains may not be getting the oxygen they need, and also robs us of the stress-relieving capabilities of breath.
It’s important to stop once in a while and literally take a breather. Practicing conscious breathing can help your brain better manage stress and emotions and can be performed anytime, anywhere.
One of the healthiest ways to blow off steam is to get a regular exercise program going. You can work exercise easily into your schedule by doing yoga in the morning, walking or biking to campus, or reviewing for tests with a friend while walking on a treadmill at the gym. Remember to freshen up post workout. Tip: Pack toner in your gym bag or locker.
You may not realize it, but your diet can either boost your brain power or sap you of mental energy! While a healthy diet isn’t generally thought of as a stress management technique or a study aid, it can actually function as both!
Skip the sugar! Sad but true: Any foods that cause a spike in insulin can lead to inflammation, which can trigger mood swings and even an acne flare – Now that’s stressful! Aim for a brain and skin-friendly diet of leafy greens, fruits, whole grains, and plenty of water to keep quenched. Tip: Try sipping spearmint tea.
